How you can make your mark

As a Naval Architect at SMIT Salvage you fulfill a pivotal role between the office and projects. The world is your working area. You never know where and when a ship will be in distress and that gives your work as a Naval Architect extra excitement and adventure. This sounds cliché, yet it is our reality. The successful candidate will undertake an exhilarating profession as a naval architect. When a ship is in distress, you typically travel with a professional team of colleagues lead by a Salvage Master to the marine casualty.

Your expertise and profession is critical to salvage and rescue a ship quickly and successfully preserving value and safe guarding the environment.  As a Naval Architect you provide preparatory and executive support in the realization of both salvage operations and wreck removal projects. Please search You Tube or Google for examples of Smit Salvage  wreck removal projects such as the Baltic Ace or emergency response project Modern Express. Depending on the job, you work from our office in Houston or at the project site that can be anywhere in the world. In order to properly fulfill the role of Naval Architect, it is important that you have a hands-on attitude and desire for adventure. Based on the salvage plan that is initiated on location with naval architecture input, you perform technical calculations regarding the feasibility and realization of a ship's salvage. You also devise and design technical solutions for specific project-related problems, such as repairing damage, towing connections, lifting and pulling plans.

Your responsibilities as a Naval Architect

  • Ground reaction, stability and strength calculations
  • Use of Hecsalv and / or GHS for modeling and salvage assessment.
  • Supervising and assessing the construction work of subcontractors.
  • Developing and improving calculation methods for salvage and wreck removal projects.
  • Contribute to the further development of new salvage equipment or the improvement of existing salvage equipment.

As you would expect from a leading international maritime service provider, you work with us with state-of-the-art equipment, craft and professionals. You are responsible for planning your own work, so that the desired results, such as calculations and / or a design, are available in time. You report to the Manager of Engineering and Projects.

Your qualities
You can make your mark as Naval Architect if you have:

  • A bachelor degree or higher in engineering (naval architecture concentration).
  • Demonstrable experience in naval architecture / constructional field.
  • Experience with various software programs, such as GHS, AutoCAD, Rhino and Hecsalv.
  • A practical and flexible attitude.
  • Working together in multi-cultural teams should present no problem for you and you have an excellent command of the English language.
  • Additional Language proficiency is beneficial.

You have no problem with irregular working hours and you do not find it a problem to work abroad for a longer period of time.
