ALEX IS MAKING HIS MARK AS GRADUATE PROJECT ENGINEER

Alex Budge

What inspires me to work at Boskalis?

Team spirit

Varied, fast-paced work, friendly colleagues, and a unique team spirit – with everyone keen to support. Those are some of the aspects of the Boskalis Graduate scheme that stand out for Alexander Budge, Graduate Project Engineer at Subsea Services Aberdeen, Scotland.

Supporting divers

“At Boskalis Subsea Services, we specialize in integrated services for the offshore energy industry, working with saturation divers who operate at over 100 metres below sea level. All onshore and offshore staff have a common goal: to make sure the divers can do a good job and return to the boat safely. It’s impressive to see and great to be part of,” says Alex, who studied mechanical engineering at Robert Gordon University in his home city of Aberdeen.

Emergency offshore assignment

Alex started the Boskalis Graduate scheme in September 2021. He was quickly sent offshore on an emergency leak investigation campaign. “We successfully located multiple leaks subsea and rectified the problem. Since then, I’ve been doing preparatory work in the office for a large decommissioning scope that involves cutting and removing pipework from the seabed, as well as cutting the riser of an FPSO (floating production storage and offloading vessel) using a work-class ROV (remotely operated vehicle),” he explains. “This has been a great experience as I was the main point of contact between the project and all our third-party equipment suppliers.”

Exciting opportunities

A qualified ski instructor and mountain biker, Alex, 25, enjoys the fast pace of Subsea Services, with projects that typically run from three to four months from tendering to completion. He’s finding the Graduate scheme to be well-structured, allowing him to develop personally and to meet graduates from across Boskalis. “I’m ambitious for a career that gives me the opportunity to try different areas of engineering and to travel across the globe. It’s all possible at Boskalis. The Offshore Energy business unit is in a great position right now, with rapid expansion across the business and lots of new and exciting projects on the horizon.” Aberdeen is a great place to start. “The team here has been very welcoming. If you come in with the right attitude, keen to learn, you’ll always have a network of people willing to help you,” Alex points out.
