When you move to the Netherlands, you will need to open a Dutch bank account to receive your salary, rent an apartment or just to pay for your groceries at the supermarket.   

To open a private bank account in the Netherlands, you will need to either make an online appointment or simply walk into your nearest branch with all of your details. To open a bank account in the Netherlands you will need the following:  

  • Your Citizen Service Number (In Dutch: Burger Service Nummer - BSN)  
  • A valid form of ID (passport or identity card - often a driver’s license is not accepted)  
  • Proof of address (i.g. a rental contract)  
  • Residence permit if you come from outside of the EU  

Once all the details have been processed, you will have to simply wait until your account is approved and your new debit card is sent out to you.
