mAAK MET ONDERNEMERSCHAP EN CREATIVITEIT ÉCHT HET VERSCHIL

FAQ about our Flexdesk

Boskalis applies fixed procurement terms and guidelines for its suppliers. These are laid down in the following documents: Supplier Code of Conduct and Boskalis General Hire Conditions Temporary Personnel. The Supplier Code of Conduct can be found via the following link: https://boskalis.com/terms-and-conditions-of-purchase. These terms apply to all collaborations with Boskalis.

If you are not a preferred supplier, it is not possible to directly submit independent contractors to Boskalis. In that case, the submission of independent contractors is handled via our broker.

Boskalis invests in long-term, sustainable partnerships with a selected group of suppliers and works with preferred suppliers. At present, we are not actively looking for new suppliers. Leaving your details via this page is entirely without obligation. If there is interest in a further introduction, we will contact you.

Internship

The majority of Boskalis’ internships take place in the Netherlands, however, occasionally there are opportunities for doing an internship abroad. We have openings for all kinds of educational backgrounds but are always looking for civil engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering and finance & control students.

We have opportunities for either a practical internship or a graduation internship as a part of the final semester of your studies. If you’re studying at a naval academy or have a similar background, there is also a possibility of doing an internship as a crew member.

Looking for a practical internship at Boskalis? We advise you to take a look at the current vacancies on our career page. Didn’t find a suitable match? You can submit an open application (please include your CV) on our open application portal for internships: link here.

Do you already have a graduation assignment? Please mention this in your application, as this will increase the chance of you landing the graduate internship position. We sometimes offer specific graduation assignments, you can find these on our career page.

Once you have submitted your application to one of our open vacancies, our recruiters will estimate if Boskalis can currently provide you with a suitable internship position. If there’s a potential match, they will get back to you within 5 working days. If you’ve sent us an open application, a response might take 2-6 weeks. If you don’t get a response within this period, we unfortunately haven’t been able to find a spot for you at the moment.

The compensation ranges between €370,- and €510,- depending on your internship and educational background. This amount is paid on a 4-week basis and includes travel costs.

Depending on your internship, you could either work at our campus in Papendrecht or at one of our project sites.

If you’re traveling by public transport, the closest station to our campus is Sliedrecht Baanhoek. You can get on the Boskalis shuttle bus which will be waiting outside the station and will take you to the office within 5 minutes. Traineeship FAQ

Boskalis offers a technical operations traineeship, a fleet traineeship and a  finance traineeship. In 2026 Traineeships will start in September. We also have a traineeship for people with an vocational background, more about our MBO traineeship can be found here.

In order to be eligible to apply for the Boskalis traineeship in September 2026, you need to graduate before the starting date of your traineeship. In general, trainees have up to two years of working experience.

If you are going to be starting with us as a trainee, we will gladly look at the possibilities for bridging any intervening period.

You have two choices: you can opt for a career in the Netherlands or you can embark on an international career. If you choose for an international career, you have to be willing to travel. You will spend one or two five-month periods abroad and will work in the Netherlands for the remaining time. The traineeship program consists of two six-month periods, including assignments and learning blocks. If you prefer a career within the Netherlands, you should go for the Boskalis Nederland Traineeship. Good to know: After completing your international traineeship, it is also mandatory to work abroad.

Only for the Boskalis Nederland traineeship it's required to speak Dutch. For the international tracks, speaking Dutch is not necessary.

There are lots of opportunities for personal development during the traineeship. For example: on and off the job coaching by your mentor, a dedicated business coach and an external coach. There are internal- and external training sessions to give you and your fellow trainees more information to be able to discover what motivates you and to specify your development goals.
Examples of courses are: Insights Discovery, Time Management, Finance for non-Financials, safety courses, specific dredging, offshore or infra related courses, depending on your specialization. These are just examples as there are a lot more courses to sink your teeth into.

Yes, you can! Join the Boskalis TraineeCast on February 12th - 13:00 and have the opportunity to ask our trainees anything you want to know.  You'll get the chance to get all your questions answered directly from those who have experienced the traineeship first-hand.  Sign up here: https://careers.boskalis.com/event/32/boskalis-traineecast-2026

Relocating FAQ

The Dutch healthcare system is known as one of the best in the world. If you work in The Netherlands, you are required to apply for basic health insurance (even if you have a part-time job or paid internship).

From the moment you have a Citizen Service Number (in Dutch: Burger Service Nummer - BSN), you have four months to apply for health insurance in the Netherlands. You risk a fine if you wait too long. The basic insurance plan is already quite extensive and is more or less equal for all health insurance companies. This insurance package usually covers essential medical care, such as:

  • Visits to and treatments by a general practitioner;
  • Pharmaceuticals;
  • Hospital care and other medical care, operations, and treatments performed by doctors and physicians, such as surgeons, pediatricians, cardiologists and oncologists;
  • Physiotherapy (only for some chronic conditions);
  • Dental care (until the age of 18);
  • Pregnancy and birth care;
  • Emergency transport;
  • Emergency medical care abroad (according to Dutch standards and tariffs).

Boskalis has a corporate company health insurance (currently CZ), which is most beneficial to be used at least for the first year. If you participate in the group health insurance scheme and take out the recommended supplementary insurance package, you qualify for an additional gross allowance of €300 annually (pro rata). For more information, please contact HR Shared Services.

When you move to the Netherlands, you will need to open a Dutch bank account to receive your salary, rent an apartment or just to pay for your groceries at the supermarket.

To open a private bank account in the Netherlands, you will need to either make an online appointment or simply walk into your nearest branch with all of your details. To open a bank account in the Netherlands you will need the following:

  • Your Citizen Service Number (In Dutch: Burger Service Nummer - BSN)
  • A valid form of ID (passport or identity card - often a driver’s license is not accepted)
  • Proof of address (i.g. a rental contract)
  • Residence permit if you come from outside of the EU

Once all the details have been processed, you will have to simply wait until your account is approved and your new debit card is sent out to you.

Here you can find some of the most well known banks in the Netherlands:

Of all Europeans, Dutch residents face the longest daily commute. No less than 30 percent of workers in the Netherlands spend 45 minutes or more on the road or public transport between home and work.

Public transport and OV chipcard

The most convenient way to use all sorts of public transport (train, bus, tram and metro), is by owning the so-called OV chipcard. Here you can find detailed information regarding what OV chipcard is and what types of OV chipcard there are: OV-chipkaart: go anywhere with Dutch public transport.

If you need to travel often, you can benefit a lot from buying an NS subscription. You can do so when you have a personalized OV chipcard (to get one, you must have a Dutch address and a bank account). Here you can have a look at the various possibilities: Products | NS.

Travel apps

The best way to organize your journey is by using an app that can guide you and show you the schedule of the public transport you need. Here are the two of the most used apps in the Netherlands:

  • 9292: This app helps you plan your public transport journey anywhere in the Netherlands, at any time, using all modes of transport you want to use. The app allows you to search for addresses, postcodes and any stations or stops you want to travel through and it gives you a step-by-step route to get to the location of your choice. If you don’t have an OV chipcard, you can buy an online ticket using the app.
  • NS: With the same name as the Dutch Railway system company, the NS app is similar to 9292’s services - but only covers train journeys. The app also provides live updates on train delays, disruptions and planned maintenance so travelers can check what’s working and what isn’t. Just like 9292, the NS app allows you to buy tickets online.

The Belastingdienst is the government's tax collection and customs service in the Netherlands. It is part of the Ministry of Finance. Whether you're a Dutch citizen or an expat, you are required to pay taxes when you earn money while living in the Netherlands.

One of the most important things to understand about your Dutch salary is the difference between your gross and net salary:

  • Your gross salary (in Dutch: bruto salaris) is the total amount of your salary before tax and other costs are deducted;
  • Your net income (in Dutch: netto salaris) is your salary after income tax, social security payments and contributions for your pension have been deducted.

The net salary is the amount that is deposited in your bank account each month/4 weeks. When discussing your salary, Boskalis always refers to the gross monthly or 4-weekly amount. Be sure to check the net amount as there is quite a difference between the two values. On request, the payroll administration from Boskalis can make a pro forma calculation which gives you an indication of the net salary you will earn.

If you are registered in a municipality in the Netherlands, you obtain a Citizen Service Number (Burger Service Nummer – BSN). A citizen service number is a unique number for anyone in respect of matters related to the Dutch government authorities. The BSN will facilitate any interaction with the Dutch authorities: starting a job, opening a bank account, deducting your taxes and social security contributions, using the healthcare system, applying for possible benefits, announcing a change of address, etc. By having a citizen service number, the Dutch government authorities also intend to improve service to you, to combat fraud and to provide more protection off your privacy. If your stay as a foreign employee exceeds a 4 month period, you must register within your municipality.

When you start working for Boskalis, the Relocation Company will assist you to obtain your BSN.

In the Netherlands, you can easily travel by train, bus, bike, tram or even by taxi. Therefore, you can easily arrange day trips or vacations among the many beautiful places that are worth seeing without having to worry about transportation. Here you can find some inspiration for beautiful cities and villages to put on your must-visit list.

Expats from within the EU, the EEA (the EU plus Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway) or Switzerland do not need a work or residence permit for the Netherlands, as citizens of these nations have the right to freedom of movement within each other's countries.

Every non-EU citizen who wants to work in the Netherlands has to obtain a valid work permit. A work permit is valid only for the employer who makes the request and ceases if/when the employee leaves the job. There is no general work permit for the Netherlands. When you start working for Boskalis, “The Relocation Company” will assist you with the application for a work permit.

When you bring your family members with you, they will receive a residence/work permit as a “family member”. This makes it possible for them to stay/work in the Netherlands. In case you want to bring your family to the Netherlands, please discuss this with your HR manager and make sure that a permit is applied for them as well.

Education is compulsory in the Netherlands from the age of five to sixteen, however, most children start to attend primary school at age of four. While the structure of primary education in the Netherlands is straightforward, the structure of the Dutch secondary education system often seems confusing because of the multiple paths and graduation ages in high school. In reality, Dutch secondary schools are similar to those in most other countries, with one stream to prepare students for vocational training (VMBO) and another to prepare students for university (VWO). The main difference in the Netherlands is that there is a third, middle stream in high schools that prepares students to study at universities of applied sciences (HAVO).

FAQ about our cadetship

The cadetship is open to maritime college students aged 18 and over. Most of the colleges we partner with, require two 6-month sea phases at different stages of the training. We offer cadetships for both sea phases, e.g. your second-year or last-year sea phase.

You’ll be working 12-hour shifts. During those shifts, you and your team will take on any challenge. As our vessels operate all over the world, our crews are highly self-reliant. There’s no such thing as ‘not my job’. Anything that can be repaired, is done so by the crew. During shifts, you will get the time you need to complete your Training Record Book.

Yes, we have equipped our vessels with Starlink, so you’ll have excellent free Wi-Fi across the globe.

Your cadetship at Boskalis typically covers one of your two 6-month sea phases. Rotation varies based on the project, the location and type of the vessel, and may range from 4 to 6 weeks on and 2 to 4 weeks off.  This may differ per person and project, and in some cases all 4 months can be spent on board in a row. We make sure that your sea time matches the requirements of your college, including coursework and exams.

We understand how important family is and we’ll help you attend family events.

Your work gear, PPE and even toiletries are provided by Boskalis. All you need to bring is:

  • training Record Book – vital for all cadets!
  • passport
  • vaccination records
  • medication
  • laptop
  • telephone and chargers
  • perhaps noise-cancelling headphones
  • indoor shoes and clothes

and anything else you can’t do without.

Meals are served on schedule, accommodating the watch system. Our excellent catering services offer international menus and meet any dietary requirements you may have.
