BENNY IS MAKING HIS MARK AS A CAD ENGINEER

Benny Tarcenio

What inspires me to work at Boskalis?

Benny Tarcenio (29 years old) is a CAD engineer and 3D modeler at our office in Abu Dhabi. “Our team really has an impact on the design and engineering solutions that are being brought alive by the project teams around the world.”

Benny started working at Boskalis in 2021 after graduating as a civil engineer in his birth country the Philippines. “After taking my first career steps on the Manila International Airport project, I was offered the opportunity to join the CAD engineering team of the Design, Tender and Engineering Department (DTED) in Abu Dhabi. Moving abroad and settling in was no problem for me, as I already had family working in Abu Dhabi and I knew it as a nice, safe and family-oriented city.”

As a CAD engineer, Benny supports tenders and ongoing projects with a broad range of drawing skills: from 2D engineering drawings and plan views to highly complex 3D designs. “Our team provides Boskalis’ worldwide project teams in many disciplines with everything they need when it comes to drawings and models. I work on one or more projects at a time, depending on the scale of the projects. Large scale land reclamation projects are my favorite, as they usually contain many different scopes such as dredging and coastal protection.”

MORE THAN DRAWING

Benny emphasizes that CAD engineering at Boskalis involves much more than drafting and drawing. “I’m not just putting lines on a screen. Every drawing has to fit the specific design while considering engineering boundaries and limitations such as slopes and gravitational forces. Performing advanced calculations is also an important part of the job. For example, we’re currently working on a tender for a dredging and reclamation project in the Middle East. Besides drawing and model coordinating, I’m busy answering questions such as: how much rock do we need and which volume of sand has to be dredged? Our work really has an impact on the final design and execution.” Seeing the end result of a project he worked on really gives Benny a feeling of accomplishment. “My job can be challenging, but very rewarding as well. Each project has a new set of engineering challenges that you have to face, it’s never routine.”

GROWTH PATH

The many growth opportunities are a great advantage of working at Boskalis. “When I started here as a junior CAD engineer, I wasn’t even that familiar with dredging and marine works. I got the opportunity to learn about the business and develop myself. I could – and still can –  rely on a lot of support from my strong and diverse group of colleagues here at Building 7, where we maintain a free, open and direct ‘working environment’. By now, I’m in a medior position and already thinking about my next career steps. My managers take my ambitions very seriously and actively help me carve a growth path for the upcoming years, achieving all the competences I need to reach a senior role. In the future, I’d like to become a model coordinator or team lead. And if one day I decide it’s time to pursue a different path, it’s always possible to develop myself ‘sideways’, towards a different discipline or department within Boskalis.”
