Environmental engineer Carmen Wing Yan Tse (25 years old) is making a significant impact on the Finger Pier 3 (FP3) project in Singapore, where she keeps on developing her practical and management skills.
While studying in Hong Kong, Carmen interned with the Hong Kong government in country park management. She completed her geography degree before pursuing a master’s in applied Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at the National University of Singapore (NUS). After her studies, Carmen chose to launch her career with Boskalis in Singapore. “The organization seemed perfect to put my skills in environmental management into practice. I started as a geotechnical database engineer and quickly expanded into environmental engineering.”
Carmen has worked on FP3 – a major land reclamation project in the Port of Singapore – for the past 2,5 years. In her role, she oversees environmental compliance, runs impact assessments and ensures we meet with all regulatory requirements as specified in contract specifications. “My role combines office and fieldwork”, she explains. “I implement Environmental Monitoring and Management Plans (EMMP) in the office and handle practical tasks such as sample collection and subcontractors supervision in the field. This combination of duties allows me to apply my technical skills while managing the complexities of construction and dredging.”
Carmen also supports other dredging projects by advising on document preparation, selecting environmental sampling equipment and handling stakeholder relations. “This hands-on experience has broadened my understanding of stakeholder dynamics and allowed me to contribute effectively across projects.”
“I’m particularly delighted by the sustainability roadshow we hosted in June”, Carmen smiles. “I helped organise and present our EMMP to colleagues from different departments. The event truly celebrated the importance of sustainability in construction and sparked vibrant cross-disciplinary discussions. It was gratifying to see our commitment to balancing operational work with environmental protection being recognised and appreciated. The experience was both rewarding and inspiring, showcasing our collective dedication to making a positive impact.”
Carmen greatly values the supportive and collaborative atmosphere at Boskalis. “Even though we work across different projects and offices, there’s always a strong sense of support and unity. I also appreciate the chance to visit different offices and participate in conferences and seminars, which further enhances my learning and connection with the broader team. A highlight this summer was visiting the Dutch campus in Papendrecht and running in the Rotterdam Marathon with the Boskalis team.”
Looking ahead, Carmen is exploring roles in environmental engineering, GIS and sustainability within Boskalis. “I aim to progress into roles with larger projects and leadership responsibilities, continuing to develop my skills and contribute to Boskalis’ success.”
